In the last two years, I have listened to a lot of audiobooks, probably in excess of 30 or so. Although I still prefer reading a physical book or my Kindle, I have found audiobooks to be a great addition to my gym workouts.
Every time I used to go on a treadmill or lift weight it would get mundane and repetitive very quickly. I used to burn through playlists of songs but I would always get bored of them eventually.
At home, I regularly listen to podcasts and audiobooks so I thought I'd give it a go at the gym and it's my new favourite thing.
Exercise your brain AND muscles
After a workout, I used to be very physically tired but not mentally tired. Even when I laid down to go to bed my mind would still be racing. As soon as I started listening to audiobooks at the gym I get home and I'm absolutely zonked!
Get pumped with words
I like to listen to motivating things like autobiographies of people I admire. Especially if it's read by that person it's like they are in your ears shouting words of encouragement.
Revise without trying
For the students out there or anyone who has a test coming up, you can revise and exercise at the same time. Find an audiobook on your chosen topic and revise without even trying. Two bird = one stone.
Pick something you have always wanted to read
There might be a book you have always wanted to read but you know you'll never get the time to sit down and actually read it. Well, audiobooks have got you covered here. If you exercise for a few hours a week you can get through some pretty big books quite quickly.
Give it a try
If you're interested in checking out audiobooks, I recommend Audible (By Amazon). It's around £7.99 a month to subscribe, you get one book each month to keep and on the off chance you don't like it you can swap it for another! There are a few other providers online but they are a lot more expensive from my experience.
(Bonus tip: They have the entire Harry Potter series narrated by Stephen Fry.)
